BLOG: SPLIT SPECTACLE â€“ TORCIDA CELEBRATES 70th BIRTHDAY

Last night on the stroke of midnight city of Split was lighted with flares and fireworks. In that way TORCIDA â€“ famous supporter's group of Croatian football club Hajduk, started the celebration of its 70th birthday on 28 October 2020.

Croatian saying â€ž GORILO JE NEBO IZNAD SPLITA â€œ (the sky above Split was on fire) describes the feeling of watching hundreds of flares illuminating the sky and colouring the sea in red.

We could not tell which scenes were more spectacular, being a part of the action, viewing from the air or the sea view. The celebration of Torcida's 70th birthday was clearly seen even from distant islands such as Vis (32 nautical miles / 60 kilometres). Hopefully some of your sailors had the opportunity to witness these unforgettable moments during your yacht charter.

With last night birthday celebration Torcida even out-did themselves and the celebration of 100 years of football club Hajduk that took place back in 2011. One thing is certain Torcida knows how to put a spectacular show!

Torcida is the oldest supports group in Europe. It was founded on 28 October 1950 by a group of Dalmatian students in Zagreb prior to the match against Red Star Belgrade. The aim was to support their club with a spectacle just like the Brazilian fans did on World Cup 1950. The word Torcida came from Portuguese language, denoting loud supporters.

Even though Torcida started by just over 100 students, it now counts thousands of members. The most devoted members gather in the north stand behind the goal at Poljud stadium and try to cheer on Hajduk players during the match.
