Thanks to its position in Central Europe between latitudes 42° and 47° N and longitudes 13° and 20° E (45° 8′ 30″ N, 16° 13′ 45″ E) and its closeness to the sea on one side and mountain massive on the other, Croatia has characteristics of Mediterranean climate in the Adriatic part, Mild Continental climate in the inner land, and alpine climate in highest mountain parts. Thanks to this diversity different winds find their way through the Croatian territory. Here are some main characteristics of climate and winds in this Adriatic part of Croatia:
Climate: A typical Mediterranean climate with mild and rainy winter, and hot and dry summer is present on coastal part of Croatia. However, there are some slight differences between North and South Adriatic. Summertime temperatures can reach up to 38°C, while the winter ones can drop to -7°C in South Adriatic or even to -18°C in North Adriatic.
Regardless this temperature differences between north and south, an average of 2.600 sunlight hours per year makes Croatia Adriatic Coast one of the sunniest in the Mediterranean.
Most Common Winds: Although the strong wind makes the sense of weather even colder in wintertime, in summertime these winds come as long anticipated refreshment. Most common winds on the Adriatic Sea are Maestral in Summertime, and Bora and Sirocco in other part of the year.
Official Weather Forecasts are made by State Hydrometeorological Institute and can be frequently heard on VHF frequencies or on FM stations on the end of the news.
