KORČULA ISLAND – Extending from West to East this 182 kilometers (113 miles) long island coast consists form 195 bays and promontories in addition of 48 islets. This 6th largest Croatian island with the surface of 279 km2 (108 mi2) counts 16.000 inhabitants. Even thought it was inhabited from prehistoric times, it is best known as Greek colony Korkyra Melaina. From ancient times the island is known for its outstanding historical and cultural heritage. Most popular island cultural event ‘Moreška’ has been performed from 15th century presenting a battle of two armies over a princess. This memorable sword dance performance is accompanied by a brass band battle march. Moreška was originally held only on 29th of July – Saint Theodor Festive Day but thanks to tourism orientation of the town during summer months short versions are held weekly.
Traces of long tradition of seafaring, shipbuilding and stone-masonry can be found thought the island as they are deeply rooted in lives of locals. Enjoy narrow walkways of unique fishbone pattern of KorÄula’s Old Town, or visit to historical locality ‘Vela Spilja’ in Vela Luka on the opposite side of the island. Island is also known for its gastronomic offer (fish specialties and pastry: ‘cukarini’, ‘kroÅ¡tule’ and ‘prikle’) and top class local wines such as Grk, PoÅ¡ip and Rukatac. Just imagine the spectacular view from its highest peaks above 500 m (1.640 ft) to numerous sunbathed vineyards of KorÄula Island and vast sea horizons.
ELAFITI ISLANDS – Northwest from Dubrovnik small archipelago called Elaphites submerges from clear blue sea. Covering the area of 30 km2 (12 mi2) and with population of 850 inhabitants Elaphites have always been oriented to Dubrovnik and have always been the home of seaman of Republic of Ragusa and present Dubrovnik.
Among largest Elaphites Islands are: KoloÄep, Lopud, Å ipan, Jakljan and Olip. The island KoloÄep, being the closest to Dubrovnik, is, just as even closer Lokrum island, favorite free time swimming and recreation getaway for citizens of Dubrovnik because of abundance of lovely beaches and vegetation of 100-year old pine trees, olive groves and citrus fruits trees planted in private gardens. The island Lopud is tourist most developed among Elaphite islands and characterized by marvelous parks and beaches, great number of summer residences and medieval church ruins. The largest of all is island Å ipan recognized by noblemen as perfect place to build summer residences to enjoy peaceful bays, lush Mediterranean vegetation of cypress groves, lemon and orange trees.
PELJEŠAC PENINSULA – Second largest peninsula in the Adriatic (after Istria) hides second world largest fortification system - Walls of Stone whose construction begin in 14th century to defend valuable salt evaporation pond were built to connect Ston settlement on one side and Mali Ston settlement on the other side of Peninsula. This narrowest part (around 1450 meters) where the peninsula connects with mainland also divides two opposite bays called Mali Ston Channel and Ston Channel even though they are not channels.
Covering the surface of 348 km2 (134 mi2) in its length of 65 kilometers (40 miles) PeljeÅ¡ac is home of around 8.000 inhabitants and ideal place for farming shellfish and fish, producing wine and olive oil. Centuries old vineyards can be found on the slopes of rocky hills (highest peak is St.Ilija at 961 meters) and in fertile valleys. Visiting one of peninsula centers Orebic, Ston, Trpanj or Janjina gives you opportunity to enjoy variety of Mediterranean vegetation and to taste local oysters and superb red wine DingaÄ or Postup.
